IMPINGTON,
CAMBS.
Although there
has been no documentary evidence of coprolite workings in Impington
itself, there were diggings nearby which may well have attracted men from the
parish. According to the 1861 census there were three coprolite diggers, Alfred
Wilderspin, 22, John Thulborn,
40 and Henry Muncey, 17. Whilst there may have been a
deposit extracxted locally on one of the farmers
fields the proximity of workings in Chesterton, Fen Ditton, Horningsea and Clayhythe would have meant it was not too far for them to
have walked to the works. The 1871 census only showed one was employed but
again it seemed he probably walked to the nearby diggings.
