KNAPWELL,
CAMBS.
According to
geological literature the phosphatic nodules, known commercially as coprolites,
were found in the Knapwell Clay pit 3 feet below the
surface, but there was no mention of them being exploited. (T.Roberts,
“Jurassic Rocks of Cambs.”p62,) In the Kimmeridge
Clay south of the village, ”A short distance further I
saw a quantity of clay which had been recently thrown out of a pond...
containing numerous black phosphates of lime.” (Pennings
and Jukes-Brown, 1881, p10)
