Longstanton
On May 14th
1866 the landowner, Mr.
E.J. Hatton, received a request from a Mr. Matthews to dig the coprolites under
his land in Longstanton. Whether it was Mr. Matthews
or another contractor who won a contract is unknown but Mr. Wallis, from Barrington,
was reported to “have entered an area for
coprolites“ on July 24th that year.
In 1874 Mr. E.J. Hatton agreed to have his 900 acre
estate tested for coprolites. The contractor, Mr. Wallis was given ten days to
test it but reported to the solicitor, Mr. Francis, that there was none within
20 feet. (Cambs.R.O. Francis Bill Books,1866,p.245; 1874,p.375)
