Six or seven members of the St. George family represented the

I have read some of the Leitrim Joumal's news items, published during Charles St. George's
ownership of Hatley Manor in the 1850's and 60s. He probably did not live there
continuously, as his return from 2 years abroad was reported in 1851, and
hailed with candles in the windows and dancing in the streets. He was in
During this period Charles St. George repaired the town's public clock
and established a school offering "a sound English mercantile Education", including book-keeping. He offered a
library to the inhabitants, which was not much used. He provided blankets for
the poor in winter and gave Christmas treats. He entertained the neighbourhood lavishly in the style of the time.
